Baakhan Nyane Waa (BNW) is a not-for-profit organization, formed to create a platform where stories from different places are told to live audiences in a gurukul setting. Its main aim is to continue the tradition of storytelling our grandparents shared with us when we were kids. Most of us remember the time when our grandparents used to tell us interesting stories about our place, festivals, jatras, deities and mythical characters. Baakhan Nyane Waa tries to bring the selected local stories related to rich traditions, rituals and festivals. BNW also aims to create a digital publication of collected stories to make them more accessible. Baakhan Nyane Waa has been publishing storybooks with illustrations for children in Nepalbhasa, Nepali and English. Baakhan Nyane Waa organizes a live session of storytelling for locals from the community most preferably in an open space in a traditional setting such as Baha, Bahi and Daboo. We take a more methodical approach with themes of festivals and indigenous names of places in Kathmandu Valley. For story selection; multiple approaches to the potential storytellers are carried out. For event we collaborate with the local government, local clubs, youth, and women’s organizations.
